In October 2025, the OVBS team traveled west to Cherokee, Iowa to assemble the historic Hafer barn frame, a 30’ x 32’ structure dating back to the 1840s. This compact but impressive frame—affectionately nicknamed ''Chubby'' by the OVBS team—was originally dismantled near Marion, Ohio in 2022. The Schubert family purchased the barn to serve as a family event center on their 100-acre farm just outside of Cherokee. Matt Schubert coordinated the installation of a concrete slab with a local contractor in preparation for the frame’s arrival. Despite its smaller footprint, the Hafer frame features substantial craftsmanship, including massive 10” x 10” hand-hewn timbers and an extraordinary 12” x 20” x 30’ clear-span swing beam. Within two days, the frame and original pole rafters were fully set. OVBS reinstalled the original 16’ loft bay and used reclaimed poplar threshing boards for the loft flooring. For the enclosure, Matt selected newer saw-cut pine siding for the walls and ceiling sheathing, with the exterior protected by TigerPaw synthetic felt. In just five days, the frame was standing strong—ready to support generations of gatherings and family memories for the next 200 years.
